Lash Aftercare & Retention

The difference between a set that looks good for four weeks and one that looks patchy in ten days is almost never the set. It is what happens in the two weeks afterwards.

The first 24 hours

Keep them dry

Lash adhesive cures with moisture in the air, and it keeps curing for about a day after you leave. Getting the set properly wet during that window — a shower straight onto the face, a swim, a steam room, crying at a movie — interrupts the cure and weakens every bond at once.

So: no water on the lashes for 24 hours. Shower with your face out of the spray, skip the sauna and the pool, and hold off on any facial treatment. After that day, water is completely fine and in fact necessary — which is the part most people get backwards.

Every day after

Clean lashes hold longer

The single biggest myth in lash aftercare is that you should keep them dry to make them last. The opposite is true. Oil, sweat, sunscreen, makeup and skin cells build up at the base of the extension and break the bond down from underneath — and in a Jamaican climate that build-up happens fast.

  • Cleanse daily with a lash shampoo and a soft brush. Foam it, work it along the lash line, rinse thoroughly, pat dry.
  • Brush them out when they are dry with a clean spoolie, from the middle outward — never from the very base.
  • Let them air-dry or use cool air. Hot air softens adhesive and drops the curl.
  • Sleep on your back if you can. A face pressed into a pillow for eight hours is the most reliable way to flatten one side of a set.
What kills retention

The five real culprits

  • Oil, anywhere near the eye. Cleansing balms, oil-based removers, coconut oil, most facial sunscreens and a lot of moisturisers dissolve lash adhesive. Check what is going on your face at night.
  • Waterproof mascara. Not the mascara — the remover. Anything strong enough to take waterproof mascara off is strong enough to take your extensions with it. Skip mascara entirely; the set is doing that job.
  • Picking and rubbing. Every extension you pull takes a natural lash with it, because the bond is stronger than the lash. If something is irritating you, have it taken off properly.
  • Heat and steam. Standing over a hot pot, a steam room, a very hot shower with your face in it — repeated heat softens the bond and relaxes the curl.
  • Never cleansing them. The most common one, and the easiest to fix. Build-up at the base breaks bonds from below, and it also causes the itchy lash line people mistake for an allergy.
Wearing lashes in Jamaica

Heat, sea and sweat

The beach is fine — the salt residue is not. Swim, enjoy it, then rinse your lashes with fresh water and cleanse them properly that evening. Salt and chlorine left to dry on the lash line will shorten a set faster than the swim itself ever would.

Sweat is the same story. If you train, cleanse afterwards rather than letting sweat dry into the base. Sweat is salty and slightly acidic, and it sits exactly where the bond is.

Sunscreen needs care. Most facial SPF is oil-based, and it migrates. Keep it off the lid and lash line, or choose a non-oil formula if you are applying it every day.

Humidity is actually your friend. Adhesive cures with moisture, so island humidity gives a faster, stronger cure than a dry climate does. That part is working in your favour.

Good to know

Questions people ask

Can I shower with lash extensions?

Yes, after the first 24 hours. Keep your face out of direct spray where you can, avoid very hot water and steam, and cleanse the lashes properly rather than just rinsing them.

Can I swim with lash extensions?

Yes, after 24 hours. Rinse with fresh water afterwards and cleanse the same day — it is the salt or chlorine drying on the lash line that does the damage, not the swim.

Why are my lashes falling out so fast?

Almost always one of five things: oil near the eye, waterproof mascara or its remover, picking, heat and steam, or never cleansing them. If none of those apply and a set is not reaching two weeks, message the studio — it may be a curl or weight that is wrong for your natural lashes, and that is fixable at the next set.

What should I use to clean my lashes?

A proper foaming lash shampoo and a soft cleansing brush, daily. Do not use micellar water, cleansing balm, oil-based makeup remover or face wipes on the lash line.

Can I wear mascara on lash extensions?

Please do not. Nothing removes mascara from extensions without a remover strong enough to damage the bond, and the set already gives you the effect mascara is for.

How do I make my lashes last longer?

Cleanse daily, brush them out, keep oil away, sleep on your back and book your refill at two to three weeks rather than four. Those five habits are worth more than any product.
